4 Helpful Tips for Cleaning Travertine Pavers
Desert Tile Blogger • December 6, 2019
Keep your tiles looking their best with these tips for cleaning travertine pavers.

Travertine pavers are the perfect choice for outdoors because they can withstand damage from the elements. However, you still have to be diligent in caring for them or nature will creep in and overtake them.
Keep reading for tips on how to approach maintaining and cleaning travertine pavers.
1. Weeding
Sometimes mother nature likes to try and overtake your patio area by growing weeds or grass through the cracks between your travertine pavers. This will happen especially to the pavers that are located closest to the rest of your yard.
Carefully remove the offensive weeds and grass from between your pavers by pulling them out, making sure to get the roots and then applying a chemical deterrent for future growth.
Also, be sure to use a weed-whacker along the edge of your yard and pavers or add stone edgers
to create a separation between your lawn and the pavers. This will help avoid future weed growth.
2. Cleaning the Pavers
In order to reduce possible scratches or patterns of wear on your travertine pavers, you should regularly sweep the surface of your patio.
After sweeping, use a hose to rinse the surface and remove any excess dust and debris. If the travertine pavers have not been rinsed in a while, a high-pressure water hose can be used to remove dirt that has been caked on. Be careful not to have the pressure to high or you might unintentionally harm the surface of your pavers.
Once a year use a non-abrasive mixture of warm water and soap
made for natural stone and tile to mop the surface. This will help remove any dust and debris that is left behind after sweeping.
3. Sealing the Pavers
Travertine pavers are naturally durable to outdoor elements and are resistant to water. However, over time they will become worn and need extra protection from the harsh sun, snow, and water if used near pool areas.
Adding a protective external sealant
will give your pavers a prolonged life and can provide a shield from damage that might be caused by ice freezing and thawing, the sun beating down on them and even the saltwater or chemicals that are present in your pool.
You should have your pavers sealed every three to five years, depending on how much exposure they get to the elements.
4. Maintain the Surface
Be careful when arranging furniture or setting up your new barbecue grill on your travertine pavers. Metals, wood and heavy plastics can chip or crack your stone if not handled carefully and dropped on the stone.
Your stone can also produce wear marks if things are dragged or pulled across the surface, so if you plan on moving furniture or potted plants around, carefully pick them up and set them down.
